Kimi Werner is a name that may not ring a bell to most. An accomplished artist, chef, free diver and former U.S. National Spearfishing champion, Werner is a woman of many talents. Patagonia‘s Variables series caught up with the talented swimmer as she explained her love for spearfishing and how it has informed her life. A keen environmentalist, Werner has qualms about interacting with wildlife — even going so far as to free dive with a Great White Shark. Check it out above.

But the dark and mysterious clip, directed by Martin De Thurah, involves asteroids, alien visitors, bikers who fell to earth, and a few gorgeously rendered frozen moments of destruction. Getting Our Piece of the Pi…for Real

So what is our piece of the Pi? Well, I’m sad that Rhythm & Hues is in trouble. I have been a fan of R&H for many years and its head, John Hughes, is an old friend of mine. It kills me that those people did such amazing, Academy Award-winning work and still are without jobs as I type. John did a lot of things right, but his people clearly made mistakes. I don’t know what they were, but they caught up to R&H. Perhaps it got too big, I don’t know. I’m just extremely depressed to see it go. Our piece of the Pi is going to be fair wages, good working conditions, job security and reasonable benefits. It’s going to be a collaborative effort among the VFX houses and the people and, yes, even the studios. I don’t know the how yet, but it has to happen. We can’t keep going on like this.

Debug Yourself: Rethinking Mistakes And How They Affect Your Work

A new way to think about mistakes will both help you stop making them, and change the way you feel about them.

The author contrasts the “error model” of performance with the “bug model.” In the error model, your performance on a piece of music or a test is thought of as a perfect performance with randomness errors. With that conception, improvement means lowering your error rate. (Sound familiar?) And with this model, your performance is graded by your accuracy.

Then there’s the bug model: When you’re taking a test you’re executing a program. Since the program is deterministic, a bug will create consistent errors across a class of problems. As such, a percentage doesn’t really capture the accuracy of a program; fixing a tiny bug can turn everything being wrong to everything being right. The key, then, is to isolate the bug.

“Once you start to think of mistakes as deterministic rather than random, as caused by “bugs” (incorrect understanding or incorrect procedures) rather than random inaccuracy, a curious thing happens,” she writes. “You stop thinking of people as ‘stupid.’”

George Ferris is the subject of Valentine’s Day Google doodle. Ferris is famous for inventing the Ferris wheel that features prominently in the animated doodle.

In 1891, the directors of the World’s Columbian Exposition issued a challenge to American engineers to build of a monument for the fair that would surpass the Eiffel Tower, the great structure of the Paris International Exposition of 1889. The planners wanted something “original, daring and unique.”

Ferris responded with a proposed wheel from which visitors could view the entire exhibition. He called it a wheel that would “Out-Eiffel Eiffel.”
